The honest comparison

WordPress or custom-coded? Only one of them is built to be found.

Both can look good. Only one loads in under a second, gets quoted by AI search, and does not quietly cost you money every month. Here is the difference, with nothing hidden.

Let's be fair to WordPress first.

WordPress runs a huge share of the internet, and it earned that. It is flexible, everyone knows it, and for a blog with hundreds of articles it is a sensible choice. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

But most small business websites are not that. They are eight pages, a contact form, and a phone number, and they need to show up on Google and turn a visitor into a call. For that job, the way a typical WordPress site is built actively works against you.

Why a typical WordPress site is slow. It is not the host.

A WordPress page is assembled the moment someone asks for it. The server wakes up, runs the theme, then runs every plugin you have installed, queries the database several times, and finally posts you back a page. On top of that sits a page builder, a slider, a cookie banner, an SEO plugin, a security plugin, a backup plugin, and whatever else got added over the years.

The result is a page that arrives carrying megabytes of code it never uses. Owners try to fix it with a caching plugin, which is a plugin added to hide the cost of the other plugins.

Typical WordPress build

Assembled on request

  • Theme plus 15 to 30 plugins
  • Database queries on every visit
  • 1.5 to 4 MB page weight is common
  • 2 to 6 seconds to become usable on mobile
  • Breaks when a plugin updates
Custom-coded (what we build)

Prepared in advance

  • No theme, no plugins, no database to query
  • Pages pre-built and served from the edge
  • Only the code your site actually needs
  • Typically under a second on mobile
  • Nothing to break on a Tuesday morning

The difference is not a tweak. It is the difference between cooking a meal when the order comes in and having it plated and waiting.

Why Google cares about that.

Google measures real people loading your site: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to a tap, whether things jump around while loading. These are called Core Web Vitals and they are a confirmed ranking factor.

When two businesses are equally relevant, the faster, cleaner one wins. And it wins twice, because visitors leave slow pages. A site that takes five seconds on a phone loses a large share of its visitors before they ever see your offer. You paid for that click either way.

You do not lose those customers because your competitor is better. You lose them because their website answered first.

You can check this yourself in two minutes: run any website through Google's free PageSpeed Insightstool. Run your competitor's. Then run one of ours. It is the least arguable comparison in this whole article.

The bigger shift: AI has to be able to read you.

A growing share of customers no longer scroll ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, or read Google's AI answer at the top of the page, and it names one or two businesses. Not a page of options. One or two.

Those systems favour websites they can parse quickly and trust: clean HTML, structured data that spells out who you are and what you sell, clear headings, current information, and content written the way language models digest it. A page buried under builder markup and plugin scripts is harder to read and easier to skip.

This is the part most business owners have not caught up on yet, which is exactly why it is an opportunity. Being the site an AI can quote is a new race, and it is still early enough to win it in most Australian suburbs and niches.

We cover the how in our companion guide: Understanding SEO.

The costs nobody mentions at the quote stage.

A WordPress site is rarely finished. Plugins need licences, updates break layouts, and security holes arrive through code you did not write. Most owners end up on a maintenance retainer, or they ignore it and discover the problem when the site goes down or gets defaced.

"But can I still edit it myself?"

The fair question, and the honest answer: a custom-coded site has no plugin dashboard by default. What it can have is a small admin area built for exactly what you actually change — your events, your prices, your team, your specials — with nothing else to break and no updates to install.

Most owners find that better, because the WordPress dashboard gives you three hundred settings when you wanted to change opening hours. And for the day-to-day edits, our team handles them for you.

The trade you are actually making

WordPress gives you infinite flexibility you will mostly never use, and charges you for it in speed, security and monthly upkeep. Custom-coded gives you the exact site your business needs, built to be found, with nothing hanging off it.

Where this leaves your competitors.

Look at the businesses you compete with. Most are on a template site built years ago, carrying twenty plugins, loading in four seconds, invisible to AI search, and nobody there is thinking about any of it.

That is the gap. Not a bigger budget or a longer history — just a website built properly while theirs was built quickly. It is one of the few advantages you can buy once and keep.

  • Faster than nearly everyone in your local search results
  • Structured so Google and AI tools can quote you
  • No plugin bills, no update breakages, no security patch panic
  • A foundation that keeps working as you add SEO, ads and bookings
